Director of User Experience (UI/UX)

Our client is an award winning Information Technology firm that is seeking an experienced Director of Usability/User Experience.  The Director of Usability/User Experience is responsible for providing leadership in the development of innovative, engaging and effective designs that help our users easily solve complex problems. The ideal candidate should possess the ability to think strategically, have experience managing a team of designers, have a deep knowledge of visual and interaction design principals, and can create user-centered design best practices, process, and vision.
  • Create effective UI designs based on business requirements, delivering end-to-end user experience solutions for multiple products and platforms - from concepts, detailed wireframes, prototypes, to visual design comps, and detailed design specifications
  • Integrate User-Centered Design practices into Agile development processes.   Identify and implement process improvements and design methodologies that will make the UX team more efficient and effective
  • Head the formulation and implementation of overall objectives, policies, plans, and programs
  • Ensure consistency with User Experience best practices and standards and GNSI’s brand guidelines
  • Participate in the review of technical designs and approve process specification and design standards
  • Work with the Senior Developers and Business Analysts on designing the user interface for our various applications
  • Oversee the design of software applications using HTML, HTML5, XHTML, CSS2, CSS3, XML, XSLT, JavaScript, Ajax, and JQuery; using Adobe Suite CS6 including Photoshop CS6, Dreamweaver CS6, Adobe InDesign CS6
  • Participate in user testing definition, creating test plans, writing moderator's guides and prototyping
  • Ability to simplify and turn complex information into intuitive graphics, charts, graphs, and other forms of data visualization
  • Work closely with the design team to help enhance usability
  • Work with the development team to support and maintain existing production code in the field and develop and deliver new enhancements and products to our client base
  • Stay current on new technologies as they relate to web-based application development and user interface design
  • Experience managing 2-5 direct employees (preferably creative/UX/UI)
  • Experience building or leading UI/UX development efforts (preferably for a federal government contractor or clients)
  • BA/BS or MA/MS in graphic design, interactive design, or related discipline
  • 10 years’ of significant track record in defining and delivering great online user experiences for Web sites and Web-based applications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Solid understanding of user-centered design principles and methodologies
  • Familiarity in developing user profiles, user scenarios, task flows, and information architecture
  • Excellent visual design skills, including strong understanding of layout, color, composition and data visualization principles
  • Ability to successfully juggle multiple projects in a compressed timeline, with competing priorities
  • Practical knowledge of design tools, including Adobe creative suite, HTML, CSS
  • Experience working in an Agile environment a plus
  • Experience designing for mobile a plus
  • Strong experience with HTML, Java, JavaScript (AJAX, DOM, JSON, JQuery), and CSS
  • Work experience with SQL is a plus
  • Strong knowledge of Section 508 accessibility requirements for federal agencies
  • SVN or source management experience
  • Experience creating prototypes
  • Strong knowledge of user interface design principles
  • Proficiency in analyzing software requirements and documenting technical specifications for web applications.
  • Strong Experience with the full software development life cycle, including design, testing, deployment, and documentation activities
  • Strong experience in developing the user interface for new systems and maintaining existing system
  • Capable of reasoning and thinking through problems and ability to independently and jointly develop desired solutions
  • Client-focused attitude with excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to clearly communicate and share solutions with fellow team members
  • Committed team player with positive winning attitude
  • Working proficiency of company standard MS Windows and associated office productivity software tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
